AlertTraveler® is a system provided by your institution to help keep you and your travelers safe by providing alerts about relevant incidents and events. The AlertTraveler® app provides travelers with intelligence for countries and cities around the world, and is a handy reference right on your phone. Let's take a look at the features you'll want to have in your pocket in the case of an emergency.
Logging in from the website or from an email opens the overview map. Here you can see safety ratings and incidents in your current location, based on GPS, offering a visual overview of your current safety situation and potential destinations to support making plans.
To see a list of your travelers, open the hamburger menu and tap Travelers. Group leaders can see a list of travelers on their program, while university administrators can see all travelers from the institution. On this list, any travelers who need help are marked with a red triangle. You can also see their most recent location marked on the map, with any travelers who need help circled in red. GPS location services update:
- every 8 hours,
- any time a traveler moves more than 5 km, or
- continuously when a traveler indicates that they need help until the Help Request is resolved.
On the Safety Feed, you toggle between the list of any active Alerts for your own travel and an overview list of Alerts for your travelers. From that administrator view, you have the option to send out a Check-in Request for your travelers to ask if they are safe or if they need help. Tapping on one of these Alert cards gives you more information about the Alert, including advice on how you and your travelers can stay safe. Group leaders may even receive a Check-in Request yourself from administrators at home if something significant happens near you.
You can also use the plus icon to create an institutional alert that can be emailed, pushed as a device notification, and, optionally, sent as an SMS to your travelers. These alerts can be purely informational or can include a Check-in Request to find out how your travelers are doing.
If your institution has enabled the optional Help Request feature then a Messages area will appear in the app as well. When a traveler responds to a Check-in Request with "I need help" or initiates a Help Request from the app, a message thread will appear here for all administrators and group leaders with access permissions, initially with a status of "Opened".
You can also view the messages grouped by requester, just in case complex circumstances mean that a traveler has responded to multiple Check-in Requests to say "I need help". With the full context, you're ready for whatever might come your travelers' way.
You or any administrator can respond to an open case, which will change the status of the Help Request to "In Progress". Once you've finished helping the traveler, close the request out by opening the traveler's profile from the top of the conversation, tapping on "Help Requested", then "Mark as Solved". The case will then change to a status of "Resolved".
Travel with confidence. AlertTraveler® is the tool for making decisions and both giving and getting help if you need it around the world.
