AlertTraveler® is a system provided by your institution to help keep you safe while you're traveling by alerting you about incidents and events that affect you. The AlertTraveler® app provides you with intelligence for countries and cities around the world, and is a handy reference right on your phone. Let's take a look at the features you'll want to have in your pocket in the case of an emergency.
After an initial login from the website or an email, you'll see the overview map, which includes safety ratings and incidents in your current location, based on GPS, offering a visual overview of your current safety situation and potential destinations to support making plans.
To make sure that you receive important SMS messages, open the Hamburger menu, tap Profile, and keep your phone number updated. And while we're here, double-check that your location subscriptions are just what you need.
On the Safety Feed, you can see a list of any active Alerts for your Subscriptions. Tapping on one of these Alert cards gives you more information, including advice on how to stay safe. You can also use the Incidents tab to share information about inconveniences like traffic jams with other travelers, which places a limited-time marker on the Safety Map.
In the case of a serious emergency, your home institution can send a Check-in Request, like this one, to ask if you need help. This one popped up as a notification, which you can tap on to open, or it's always right there at the top of the Safety Feed.
Let's see what happened. Oh, we were planning to spend today near the coast, but that plan will need to change. Let's tap "I need help" and ask for help changing our itinerary.
In case you ever need more immediate assistance, AlertTraveler® also puts emergency services at your fingertips. Tapping on the SOS tab opens a menu of numbers, specific to your GPS location. You can open one and tap the number to call, or just hold the SOS button down to call the local police number.
Some institutions have activated the messages feature for communicating with administrators right through the app. Be sure to check with your institution about the preferred method of communication.
If you see a Message tab and you've responded to say "I need help", a conversation thread with your home administrators will automatically appear. Look, an advisor just sent me that itinerary I asked for. Let's say thanks. Back in the Messages tab, I can see they've marked the situation as Resolved. But if I ever need more help with an emergency, the Contact Administrators button is right here.
Travel with confidence. AlertTraveler® is your tool for making decisions and getting help if you need it around the world.
