Overview
This KB reviews the process of initiating and processing the return student request for a student who has left the US and their SEVIS Status moved into Completed or Terminated.
Note: Any new profile will automatically be marked as invited if the student was invited previously. When a student is returning, they cannot be re-invited to the portal; portal access will be given once the returning student process is started. The new F profile will require the ISSS Admin to add the campus site and education level and J requires the program number and EV category for portal access to be available.
Return Student Process
To create a student who is returning to your institution, begin by navigating to that student's profile. Along the upper right corner of the page are a series of buttons. Then click the three dots which will give you a list of options. From that you will click Returning Student.
Then:
The ISSS Admin will then be prompted to select whether the student is returning as an F-1 student or a J-1 student.
Depending on which visa type the ISSS Admin indicates, there will then be a prompt for the required program information.
This will then create a new profile where the student will be moved from the Archived stage to the Invited stage. The ISSS Admin can then update the new profile with student information. If the ISSS Admin would like to notify the student of their new profile, the ISSS Admin can send an email alerting the student they can access the portal again.
Create I-20 Request
After completing the Returning Student process, a Create I-20 request will appear in the Requests tab of the new student's profile. The ISSS Admin will collect and update any information before approving and processing this request with SEVIS.
Viewing the Student Profile History
The previous student profile with the original student data can be viewed by going to the History tab and clicking on the Profile History section. This will switch the view to the historical student profile for the ISSS Admin to review.
