An advising application is an application started by applicants who want to get additional information before applying to a specific program. Staff members use advising applications to gather information about the interest of the applicant and their academic background in order to help guide their decision. Advising applications can be required, optional, or turned off completely. Advising applications are not or program or application cycle specific.
Advising applications can be enabled under Settings > System Features > Process Options tab. Under the Advising heading, there is a checkbox to enable advising applications. You can also add a recipient email to be notified when an advising application is created and enable SIS refresh for advising applications. The field box below allows you to set the number of months after the creation date of the advising application that applicants will be included in the SIS refresh.
You must then decide which programs should offer advising or require advising under Process > Advising.
This tool is used to create the list of programs which provide a Request Advising button on their brochure pages as well as the list of programs in which applicants create advising applications rather than program applications when they click on the Apply Now button. This page also is where you enter the text that appears at the top of the application page for advising applications.

Advising Home Page
The Advising home page is divided into three sections:
- Managing Programs with Advising Enabled - The first section deals with managing programs with Advising enabled. Any program that can have an advising phase is listed in one of the two columns. To enable advising for a program, select a program from the available programs column and click the arrow to move it to the selected programs column. In this case, both the Apply Now and Request Advising options are displayed on the Brochure page. To disable the Request Advising button for that program, remove it from the select programs column by selecting it and clicking the arrow pointing back to the available programs column.
- Managing Programs with Advising Required - The second section deals with programs that require Advising. Again, you can choose from the available programs and shift to the selected programs list. In this case, the brochure pages for the selected programs will show only the 'Apply Now' button and when it's clicked, the person starts and advising app, not a program application.
To choose multiple programs in either Available Programs or Selected Programs sections, select the program names while holding the Control key.
To shift the selected programs between the menus use the >> and << buttons to shift them right and left, respectively.
Use the All>> or the All<< key to shift the complete selection.
- Advising Page Instructions - The final section on the Advising home page deals with modifying page instructions. You can enter text of up to four thousand characters in within the box provided. This text will appear in the left column of the Application page for advising applications.
Finally, there is a checkbox to Enable requirement to complete mandatory entry applicant parameters when accessing advising applications. If this is checked, an applicant must fill in any applicant parameters you’ve marked as required before they can create an advising application.
Note: In order to withdraw Advising applications it can only be done via the Status tab. Advising applications cannot be batch withdrawn.
