Overview
This article describes how to activate and configure content for specific J-1 scholar requests.
The J-1 Requests area has dual configuration options. J-1 Request Settings describes how to display the requests to the department or scholar population. The second tab on this page is for request task assignments, for more information, check out the KB on J-1 Task Assignments.

Creating a New Request
If these out-of-the-box requests don't meet your needs, or a non-SEVIS-mapped action exists in your business practice that is not represented by these actions, you can easily create a custom request.
By clicking on the + sign in the lower right corner, you can add a new request. The title included will appear in a button on the Requests tab (viewable to the scholar, Departmental Admin, and ISSS Admin).
Setting Up Request Questionnaire
You may then add instructions and question items similar to how you'd add them in a questionnaire.
- Request Instruction - provide information to the Departmental Admin or scholar on how to complete the request.
- Search for Instructions - add instructions that were previously created and saved in Form Management.
- Question - questions that you would like the Departmental Admin or the scholar to answer when creating a new Sponsorship Request or updating Scholar Profile.
There are also three toggles within this modal:
- Active - this request is available for J-1 Requests
- Hide - this request may be active, but a question can be hidden if not needed at the time but the ISSS Admin does not want to delete the question
- Required - this question is required to be answered
Finishing Steps
Once your Request is completed, be sure to save by clicking Save in the bottom right corner. Next, you'll want to go to Site Settings > J-1 Request Settings and locate your new request title in the Request Configuration section. In order for the Departmental Admin or scholar to see your request, you must enable it by clicking in the appropriate checkbox. If you set your request up but do not enable it, only ISSS Admin will be able to see/complete the request.
As you are setting up your request, be mindful of the descriptive title you use for your Request as it will appear on the Requests tab within the Available Requests panel as a button
Note: these buttons do automatically wrap text. From the Scholar's view, when they click on the request button, they will see a modal window including your instructions and questions.
Editing an Existing Request
To edit an existing request to either add new questions or hide existing ones, click on the name of the request. This will bring you to the request configuration setup that was previously seen with building a new request.
