This article outlines the steps to cancel an already recommended Optional Practical Training (OPT) request that has not yet been processed by the USCIS. If the OPT application has already been processed by the USCIS, do NOT use this action.
- Step 1: Find the Optional Practical Training Request
- Step 2: Review SEVIS-Required Data
- Step 3: Create SEVIS Update Record
Step 1: Find the Optional Practical Training Request
- Navigate to Record > Search.
- Enter the name of the student whose OPT request you would like to cancel in SEVIS.
- The student's OPT record will display when you search for their name.
- Click the record link to view their record.
Step 2: Review SEVIS-Required Data
Terra Dotta uses a single questionnaire to handle all data related to OPT request actions (Add, Edit, and Cancel).
The SEVIS Admin will use data either from question items 1-3 or 1-2 and 4, depending on whether the student's OPT request was ever edited.
NOTE: Admins will not enter any information to question items in relation to the OPT Employment: Cancel action.
Admins will simply review the dates and information that will be used by the SEVIS Admin to complete this action in SEVIS.
- If the student's OPT recommendation was never previously edited, the SEVIS Admin will use the dates and information entered in Question Items 1-3 when an Admin creates an OPT Employment: Cancel action for the student in the SEVIS Admin.
- If the student's OPT recommendation was previously edited, the SEVIS Admin will use the dates and information entered in Question Items 1-2 and 4 when an Admin creates an OPT Employment: Cancel action for the student in the SEVIS Admin.
2) Employment End Date - date will display
3) Full or Part-Time Employment - Full or Part-Time will be selected
4) New Full or Part-Time Employment - if previously edited, Full or Part-Time will be selected
- After all the SEVIS-mapped question items have been reviewed by an Admin and contain the data necessary for SEVIS, proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Create SEVIS Update Record
See the KB SEVIS Admin: Creating a SEVIS Update Record for detailed instructions about this step.
