The Terra Dotta Location Web Service uses a public domain resource for city and country names and their longitude and latitude. It is the Geonames table of cities with greater than 1,000 inhabitants. If your applicants are registering their travel, but the location they are going to isn't a location you've added, then the Terra Dotta Location Web Service allows them to select a location that doesn't yet exist in the site's location list. This becomes necessary when applicants are completing risk management programs or side trips.
If the location for their itinerary is not available in the selection list, applicants can manually search for the location. Once the applicant searches for a city, the system pulls the best matches. If the applicant would like to select a city, they can move it over to the 'Selected' list.
Note:
Some of the city names might not be an exact match for what is more commonly used in the United States.
- Example: Rome, Italy is Roma, Italy in this table.
Any cities added by applicants in this way will automatically be added to the site's global locations list in System Features > Locations.
Admins similarly can use the Terra Dotta location web service when registering side trips for applicants by going to the itineraries tab of an application.
To enable the Terra Dotta location web service, go to Settings > System Features > Programs, and select the checkbox next to 'Enable location lookup via external web service (for selection of locations not in your site's list)'.
Note: This web service uses the Terra Dotta Community Library registration keys to security communicate back and forth with the Terra Dotta Location Web Service. Your site must be registered with the TDCL in order to use this location lookup service.
