Overview
This article outlines the process for a program extension for J-1 Scholars. As a J-1 scholar approaches the program end date listed on the Academic Objective, the A/RO must extend the program in SEVIS. To do this, Terra Dotta ISSS has created an easy extension process to support your J-1 scholar extensions.

Locating Extend Program Option
Both the ISSS Admin and Department Admin can initiate the J-1 extension for a J-1 scholar. The Department Admin would have the Extend Program button if the ISSS office allows them to have access to it and this setting is found in Configurations > Site Settings > J-1 Request Settings.

You may also attach documentation as needed to the request through the Document Upload section.
After the request has been created, the Extend Program is listed in the scholar’s Pending Request panel. Duplicate requests are prevented by notifying the Department that an existing request has already been created. The Department Admin may edit the request until the ISSS Admin has approved or denied the request. If denied, a new extension request may be created.
Reviewing the Program Extension Request
To review the submitted information, the ISSS Admin can click on the Extend Program request to see the information entered. The ISSS Admin can delete a request by clicking the trash icon.
If the ISSS Admin needs to update the financial information at the same time, new funding information fields are also presented. The ISSS Admin can edit the request as needed before approval or denial. Documentation may be attached at this time.
By scrolling to the bottom of the page, the ISSS Admin sees the option to add a comment, make a decision, reassign, or update the request. At the time of a decision, the ISSS Admin sees five options - generate SEVIS update record, post to RTI extension, post to RTI financial update, deny, or need more info. Depending on the action selected, the ISSS Admin will be able to see a new Pending Update (SEVIS Admin > Pending Updates) or be presented with the Post to RTI screen.
