This article outlines the steps to edit a dependent SEVIS record via the SEVIS batch
Step 1: Complete and/or Review SEVIS-Required Data
Clients may either:
- Allow the dependent (or the principal) to edit SEVIS-mapped profile information, OR
- Only Admins can complete the update.
NOTE: SEVIS-Mapped fields located in the Terra Dotta Profile may be integrated with your student information system for dependents, which means that if the data in these fields do not appear, or is incorrect, you must first correct the data in the field in your institution's SIS. This information will be pulled into Terra Dotta from your SIS in the next regularly scheduled update.
Depending on how your site is configured, Admins should review, edit, or complete the required SEVIS-mapped fields, which are located in the Terra Dotta Profile.
Profile Tab
The following required biographical data is used to create a dependent in SEVIS applies to the Dependent: Edit action. Principals and dependents cannot edit these fields; only an admin can if the dependent data is not integrated with your SIS. This data is located in the dependent's Terra Dotta Profile (Profile Tab), and includes:
- First Name
- Middle Name (Note: text entered in this field will automatically be combined with the First Name field and sent to SEVIS as Given Name in the batch)
- Last Name
- Email Address (Note: this is the only field in this display that can be edited by the principal or the dependent). Terra Dotta requires a unique dependent email address to create a new profile; to address this need, you must create a "dummy" email address with only numbers before the @ symbol, to ensure that it will not be delivered to SEVIS in the batch.
- Date of Birth
- Gender
NOTE: If these fields are not integrated with your institution's system of record, you can edit them if you have administrative access to Maintenance > Edit User.
Information Tab
The following SEVIS-mapped data (required biographical/educational data) needed to create a dependent in SEVIS is applicable to the Dependent: Edit action and is located in their Terra Dotta Profile (Information Tab), including:
- Suffix (Optional)
- Country of Birth
- Country of Citizenship
- Relationship to Principal

Step 2: Create SEVIS Update Record
